Gergiev to be chief conductor of Munich Phil

NEW YORK (AP) ? Valery Gergiev has been appointed principal conductor of the Munich Philharmonic starting with the 2015-16 season.

Gergiev agreed to a contract through the 2019-20 season. He will succeed Lorin Maazel, who took over last year from Christian Thielemann.

In addition, the 59-year-old Gergiev remains artistic director of the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, a position he has held since 1988. He intends to give up his post as principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra at the end of the 2014-15 season, but plans to conduct the LSO in some projects after that.

"I think Munich is a different color in the musical map of Europe and deeply rooted in this Austrian-German or better to say German or even Bavarian music tradition. Look at Richard Strauss. Look at Wagner," he said Friday during a telephone interview after a news conference in Munich. "Every program is repeated three times. In London once, sometimes twice."

Gergiev doesn't consider himself a candidate to succeed Simon Rattle with the Berlin Philharmonic. Rattle said last month he will leave in 2018 after 16 years.

"I never think this way," he said.

He will conduct a new production of Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin" at the Metropolitan Opera in the September season with Anna Netrebko, but has withdrawn from the new staging of Borodin's "Prince Igor" later in the season.

Once they've hit the proper spots, its converted into a radio signal, which is then beamed to several antennas located on different floors. IP Osgoode ? SOCAN I Say I Had a Great Time Last Semester in ...

I write this blog as a final rumination on the past two and half months of my law school life, which have been spent at the copyright collective known as the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN). I think I can safely say that the time I have spent there has been enriching in many aspects, and has taught me much upon which I can build my future legal career.

Given SOCAN?s nature, I had the opportunity to get up close and personal with the practical aspects of copyright policy, especially in the neighbouring rights area of tariffing licensees and users for the right to perform and broadcast the music of SOCAN members publicly. What interested me the most about collective management of copyright was the sheer number of people who were affected by the tariffs that SOCAN applies for, and has approved by Copyright Board of Canada. ?Seeing the effect of a SOCAN tariff play out in the licensing and royalty-collection process helped cement some of the core concepts of copyright that I learned in copyright theory class. ?I also had the chance to chat with legal counsels about the effects of the SCC?s copyright pentalogy decisions, which SOCAN was heavily involved in.? In doing so, I gained a better understanding of the interactions between law and policy, and how these interactions translated into practice. My supervisors also ensured I had a well-rounded experience by giving me the opportunity to work on internal policies, as well provide research support on litigation files.

Similar to my predecessor, Joshua Dallmann, who interned at SOCAN in the fall of 2011 (read his blog here), I was very nervous during the first two days of the internship because it was so odd being away from the cocoon of Osgoode. That changed quickly however, because my supervisors were excellent, wise and friendly teachers who put me at ease immediately. I am happy to say that I can look back on the experience and find something I have learnt from every single person in the SOCAN legal department, leaving me so much the richer in knowledge. My supervisors also spent considerable time and energy in educating me about law as a profession ? giving me tips and advice not just on practicing the law, but rather, on being a lawyer. The experience has I think, helped me grow up in a way that only practical, real world legal experience can, and has left me eager to graduate in May 2013 and return to the practice of law.

And then of course, there were the boxes of free CDs, the lunchtime concerts and the much-anticipated SOCAN Awards, all of which, I think it will suffice to say, showed me the effects of the work I was doing every day, making the endless poring over legalese completely worth it and fabulously fun.

SOCAN I say I had a great time last semester? That would be a definite, resounding ?Yes!?

The Face Of A 'Computer' From 1946

Eleanor Kolchin was once a computer.

When she accepted her first full-time job in 1946, ?computers? were people, not machines: As a programmer at Columbia University's Watson Scientific Computing Laboratory , Kolchin helped astronomers make sense of the universe by operating sofa-sized calculating machines capable of little beyond basic arithmetic. She was Columbia Engineering Quarterly's first-ever female contributor, and spent over two decades manning computers to complete astrophysics research at New York University.

Kolchin, now 86, has long since traded the punched-card machines for an iPod -- now one of her favorite gadgets -- but she's still programming, a full 66 years after getting her start. Kolchin runs the website for the Boca West Special Interest Club she belongs to and sends members their weekly e-newsletters. (?I was doing Web pages before anyone else was doing Web pages,? she says with a touch of pride, noting software from Webs.com makes it "as easy as pie.")

For our ?Life As? series, we spoke with Kolchin about the labor-intensive process of making the machines of yore do math, what the future of tech looked like in the 1950s and what amazes her most about computers now.

How did you end up in computing?
I was a math major, and I expected I would teach high school math. So before I ever got a job, I had applied to get a master's degree in math at Columbia University. My father came home one day and said he?d heard IBM was hiring mathematicians, so I sent them a letter, and I got a job there. It was 1946, and I was 21 years old.

IBM hired five mathematicians -- two women and three men -- because in a few years they were going to unveil a big machine they would use to calculate the orbits of the planets and do Moon calculations, which were the ones they used when the astronauts went to the Moon.

What was it like to be a woman working in a computing lab?
At that time, IBM fired you if you got married. The reason was, it was the end of the war and they wanted to hire people who had fought in the war, who were then coming back from World War II and wanted jobs. I think you could understand that, and people did understand that at the time.

So were you able to keep your job when you got married?
I did get married on the sly. And then in 1951 they changed the law, and I got married.

We had a lot more women working in the lab than was usual, I think. At IBM women were more likely to be key-punch operators, but I think that was not true at the Watson Scientific Computing Lab, where we had a lot of scientific women.

What could you use the machines at the computing lab to do?
The machines could only add, subtract, divide and multiply, and that?s what we?d do. When someone gave me a differential equation -- which you couldn?t put directly into the machine -- I could tell you how to solve it arithmetically and then enter it into the machine. The machine would punch out answers on a punch card.

How did you actually complete a calculation?
At the beginning, we had to do it with plug boards. It was so elementary.

If I wanted to multiply, say, 12 times 15, I would punch a ?one? and a ?two? into the first column of a card and the second column of a card, then in the third column I would put another ?one? and in the fourth column I would put a ?five.? So the first two spots would be ?one? and ?two? and that would go into place on the plug board that shows it is the multiplier, and then the third and fourth spots on the card would go to a place that showed it was the multiplicand. And then there was a third slot that was to be the result, and that would punch the answer into whichever column on the card you wanted to put it in [the cards had 80 columns in all]. And then you would need six wires to complete that.

What was most frustrating about the computers you worked with in the early part of your career?
Every time a new machine came out, you had to throw out everything you knew and start from scratch. The only advantage you had over a newcomer was that you were prepared to read the manual. If there?s one thing I learned how to do, it?s read a manual because I can?t tell you how many times I learned how a machine worked, only to have to completely relearn it.

When I get a new TV, the first thing I do is jump into bed with a manual. My iPod didn?t come with a manual, so the first thing I did was buy iPods for Dummies.

In the 1950s, what did you envision the future of technology would hold?
I never thought I would have a PC doing what it?s doing now. However, I remember Dr. Eckert [director of the Watson Scientific Computing Lab] did say to me, "One day, everybody is going to have a computer right on their desk.? My eyes popped open. That must have been in the early 50s. He foresaw it.

How did people perceive computers at the time? What did your family and friends say when you told them what you did for a living?
When I told my next-door neighbor that I was going to take the train in one day a week to work on a computer at NYU, he didn?t believe me. Not many women were working after they were married. And [in the 1950s] I was actually working at home a lot because I was doing a lot of programming from home. I would write out the program on paper using Fortran [a programming language], then I would mail it in to key punch operators at NYU, they would punch the cards out and then I would use the cards to run the program.

People really didn?t even understand what I was doing because no one had computers around. At that time, people had to go to big computing centers where there were these big machines they could use. Those machines didn?t even do what my laptop does now.

What do you appreciate most about current computers and gadgets?
I?ll tell you what gets me: the size of the computer. When they were computing the orbits of outer planets on the SSEC [IBM's Selective Sequence Electronic Calculator, which operated between 1948 and 1952] the machine took up an entire room, including the ceiling, under the floor and all the walls.

My husband has 13 symphonies on his iPod Mini and they only take up a third of the space. That boggles my mind. You don?t even know what a miracle you?re living in.

Dazzling nighttime photos of NASA rocket launch

When NASA's newest satellite soared into space late Wednesday (Jan. 30), a team of photographers captured dazzling views of the rocket streaking into orbit.

A series of long-exposure rocket launch photos released overnight by NASA show the unmanned Atlas 5 booster carrying the agency's new Tracking and Data Relay Satellite K (TDRS-K) as a bright arc of light climbing spaceward from a pad at Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The rocket lifted off at 8:48 p.m. EST (0148 Jan. 31 GMT), rising like an artificial sun as it flew into space.

One image, by launch photographer Tony Gray, shows the Atlas 5 rocket just seconds after liftoff as it appeared from NASA's Kennedy Space Center, which is near the Air Force Station launch site. NASA's cavernous Vehicle Assembly Building stands stoically in the foreground as the rocket hovers in mid-flight on the photo's right side.

The TDRS-K satellite is the first of three next-generation communications satellites to be launched in order to upgrade NASA's aging TDRS satellite constellation. The satellites serve as relays between NASA ground stations and the agency's Earth-observing satellites and other spacecraft currently orbiting the planet. TDRS-K is expected to spend at least 15 years in service once it begins operations, according to a NASA mission profile.

The first TDRS satellite was launched into space in 1983, with TDRS-K marking the 11th satellite to join the fleet. The launch provider United Launch Alliance oversaw Wednesday's Atlas 5 mission for NASA.
