RAmos W42 tablet boasts quadcore Exynos chip, sells for around $200

It's been a long, long while since we last heard about RAmos 'round here, but that doesn't mean the Chinese company isn't trying to remain relevant in the electronics game. As such, we're more than happy to tell you about the outfit's newest Android slate, the 9.4-inch RAmos W42, which is powered by a wallop of Ice Cream Sandwich, Mali-400 GPU and a Samsung-made quad-core processor -- more specifically, it's the Exynos 4412. Other tablet specs include a not-too-shabby 1,280 x 800 IPS display, 1GB RAM, 16GB of built-in storage (expandable by way of microSD) and the now-accustomed front and rear cameras. The W42 appears to be up for grabs at e-tailers like the one linked below for about 200 bucks -- now, with some great options around that same price, only time will tell whether or not folks are tempted by this very one.

A Dutch architect has designed a building that will be a single large piece from floor to ceiling, and plans to build it using a giant 3-D printing system.

The "Landscape House" was designed by Janjaap Ruijssenaars, of Universe Architecture, and is built on the principle of M?bius strips. Created by twisting a two-dimensional?surface (like a strip of paper) slightly and then connecting the ends, these enigmatic structures effectively have only one side.

Walk along the floor, and you'll soon find yourself on the ceiling, then the roof, then the underside. Or, at least, you would if you could, and if Ruijssenaars hadn't built stairs and walkways into the structure. As you can see in the diagram, the building's footprint is roughly triangular and folds on itself in a way that makes it difficult to visualize how it would?appear in real life.

Regardless of how confusing it seems on paper, it's structurally sound and the firm plans to build it?using the innovative "D-Shape" industrial printing method. D-Shape is essentially a huge?additive 3-D printer that lays?down layers of a sand-based, "marble-like" material.

The inventor of the process, Enrico Dini, claims that the resulting compound is superior to common cement and does not require reinforcement, although Landscape House's unconventional shape and size will in fact need it. It will also have to be produced in a few pieces and assembled, though the end result will be a single continuous structure.

The D-Shape machinery is precise to within 5 to?10 millimeters, meaning large objects like stairs and walls can be easily formed, but finer structures will have to be adjusted by hand. Smaller 3-D printers, on the other hand, are good enough that they can nearly reproduce the sound of a vinyl record.

The cost for each building, presumably not including furnishings, plumbing, and wiring, is around $5 million to $6 million.?Ruijssenaars told the BBC that there is already interest among museums and private individuals; the first is planned for completion in 2014.

Controlled crumpling of graphene forms artificial muscle

Jan. 23, 2013 ? Duke University engineers are layering atom-thick lattices of carbon with polymers to create unique materials with a broad range of applications, including artificial muscles.

The lattice, known as graphene, is made of pure carbon and appears under magnification like chicken wire. Because of its unique optical, electrical and mechanical properties, graphene is used in electronics, energy storage, composite materials and biomedicine.

However, graphene is extremely difficult to handle in that it easily "crumples," which, depending on circumstances, can be a positive or negative characteristic. Unfortunately, scientists have been unable to control the crumpling and unfolding of large-area graphene to take advantage of its properties.

Duke engineer Xuanhe Zhao, assistant professor in Duke's Pratt School of Engineering, likens the challenge of controlling graphene to the difference between unfolding paper and wet tissue.

"If you crumpled up normal paper, you can pretty easily flatten it out," Zhao said. "However, graphene is more like wet tissue paper. It is extremely thin and sticky and difficult to unfold once crumpled. We have developed a method to solve this problem and control the crumpling and unfolding of large-area graphene films."

The Duke engineers attached the graphene on a rubber film that had been pre-stretched multiple times of its original size. Once the pre-stretch in the rubber film was relaxed, part of the graphene detached from the rubber while other part kept adhering on the rubber, forming an attached-detached pattern with a size of a few nanometers. As the rubber was relaxed, the detached graphene was compressed to crumple. Once the rubber film was stretched back, the adhered graphene will pull on the crumpled graphene to unfold it.

"In this way, the crumpling and unfolding of large-area atomic-thick graphene can be controlled by simply stretching and relaxing a rubber film, even by hand," Zhao said.

The results were published online in the journal Nature Materials.

"Our approach has opened avenues to exploit unprecedented properties and functions of graphene," said Jianfeng Zang, a postdoctoral fellow in Zhao's group and the first author of the paper. "For example, we can tune the graphene from being transparent to opaque by crumpling it, and tune it back by unfolding it."

In addition, the Duke engineers layered the graphene with different polymer films to make a "soft" material that can act like muscle tissues by contracting and expanding on demand. When electricity is applied to the graphene, the artificial muscle expands in area; when the electricity is cut off, it relaxes. Varying the voltage controls the degree of contraction and relaxation, giving actuation strains over 100 percent.

"Indeed, the crumpling and unfolding of graphene allows large deformation of the artificial muscle." Zang said.

"New artificial muscles are enabling diverse technologies ranging from robotics and drug delivery to energy harvesting and storage," Zhao said. "In particular, they promise to greatly improve the quality of life for millions of disabled people by providing affordable devices such as lightweight prostheses and full-page Braille displays. The broad impact of new artificial muscles is potentially analogous to the impact of piezoelectric materials on the global society."

Zhao's work is supported by the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Triangle Materials Research Science and Engineering Center, NSF Materials and Surface Engineering program, and National Institutes of Health (NIH). Other members of the team are Duke's Qiming Wang and Qing Tu.

Circadian rhythms can be modified for potential treatment of disorders

Jan. 22, 2013 ? UC Irvine-led studies have revealed the cellular mechanism by which circadian rhythms -- also known as the body clock -- modify energy metabolism and also have identified novel compounds that control this action. The findings point to potential treatments for disorders triggered by circadian rhythm dysfunction, ranging from insomnia and obesity to diabetes and cancer.

UC Irvine's Paolo Sassone-Corsi, one of the world's leading researchers on the genetics of circadian rhythms, led the studies and worked with international groups of scientists. Their results are detailed in two companion pieces appearing this week in the early online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"Circadian rhythms of 24 hours govern fundamental physiological functions in almost all organisms," said Sassone-Corsi, the Donald Bren Professor of Biological Chemistry. "The circadian clocks are intrinsic time-tracking systems in our bodies that anticipate environmental changes and adapt themselves to the appropriate time of day. Disruption of these rhythms can profoundly influence human health."

He added that up to 15 percent of people's genes are regulated by the day-night pattern of circadian rhythms.

In one study, Sassone-Corsi and colleagues found that the biological clock controls enzymes localized in the mitochondrion, a cellular structure devoted to energy metabolism. This government occurs through acetylation of proteins, a process that operates as a switch to turn genes on and off in cells based upon the cells' energy usage.

Some of the most important acetylation events in cells are dictated by an enzyme protein called SIRT1, which senses energy levels in the cell. Its activity is modulated by how many nutrients a cell is consuming. It also helps cells resist oxidative and radiation-induced stress. SIRT1 has been linked to the inflammatory response, diabetes and aging.

Sassone-Corsi first showed the circadian rhythm-metabolism link in 2008 and 2009, and in this study, he and his colleagues reveal the metabolic pathways through which SIRT1 works.

"When the balance between clock proteins is upset, normal cellular function can be disrupted," said Sassone-Corsi, who also directs the Center for Epigenetics & Metabolism at UC Irvine.

In exploring how to regulate SIRT1 activity, Sassone-Corsi teamed with scientists from two research-and-development groups at GlaxoSmithKline -- one in the United Kingdom and the other (called Sirtris) in the U.S. -- to test proprietary small-molecule compounds that stimulate SIRT1.

In mouse studies, they were able to modulate the scale of circadian-driven gene function with the SIRT1-activating compounds, effectively governing the circadian cycle in a host of genes involved with the metabolic rate in cells. This research proves that small molecules can be used as a pharmacological strategy to control circadian disturbances and is a step toward the development of drugs that could target many conditions, including metabolic disorders, diabetes, cancer and aging.

Postdoctoral researchers Selma Masri and Kristin Eckel-Mahan, graduate student Vishal Patel and Chancellor's Professor Pierre Baldi of UC Irvine, along with Shahaf Peleg, Ignasi Forne, Andreas Ladurner and Axel Imhof of Germany's University of Munich, as well as Sassone-Corsi, contributed to the study. The National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, INSERM and Sirtris provided support.

Roe v. Wade at 40: The state of abortion rights today

On Tuesday, the United States marks the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the historic US Supreme Court decision that granted women the right to an abortion. Still, in many parts of the country it is far harder for a woman to obtain an abortion today than it was in 1973. Here is a look at the state of abortion rights in America.

1. How easy is it for a woman in 2013 to get an abortion?

This varies drastically, depending upon where she lives, what kind of insurance she has, and how much money she has.

A woman in, say, a metropolitan part of California ? where providers are fairly numerous and a fair amount of local public funding will help to pay for the procedure ? may have pretty easy access. A poor woman in Washington, D.C., where public funding of abortion is prohibited, may have a hard time paying for it. And for a poor or middle-class woman in South Dakota, where just one clinic operates (on a part-time basis) and anyone seeking an abortion must navigate a labyrinth of counseling and delay restrictions, it may prove virtually impossible.

When it comes to reproductive rights, ?there?s very much a class divide,? says Elizabeth Nash, state issues manager for the Guttmacher Institute, an abortion-rights research organization. ?Women who have money and resources and are used to the health-care system will be able to access abortion.... Women who are poor ? these restrictions make it more difficult for them.?

2. Where have abortion's foes had their biggest successes?

Americans United for Life (AUL), an antiabortion group, just released its annual ?life list,? which ranks states on the basis of ongoing legal efforts to ?create and sustain a culture of life.? Its Top 10 antiabortion states: Louisiana, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Arkansas, Arizona, Nebraska, Indiana, Missouri, Georgia, and Virginia. The group gave a special mention to five states ? Arizona, Georgia, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Virginia ? for legislation enacted in 2012.

Some of those measures, says Charmaine Yoest, president and chief executive officer of AUL, were fairly groundbreaking ones ? such as Arizona?s ban on abortions past 20 weeks, which is being challenged in court. Other big areas of focus, Ms. Yoest says, have been on defunding abortion providers, regulating access to chemical abortions (in which drugs are used to induce an abortion), and passing ?opt out? legislation, in which states restrict insurance coverage for abortion in the new exchanges mandated by the Affordable Care Act.

?Over the last two years, we have seen this tremendous upsurge in pro-life legislation at the state level,? Yoest says. ?And we actually improved our position [in the 2012 elections] in terms of pro-life representation at the state level.?

3. If Roe v. Wade were reversed tomorrow, what would happen?

Four states have laws that automatically ban abortion outright if Roe is overturned, 13 retain pre-Roe bans on the books (which are currently unenforced), and seven states have laws that express their intent to restrict abortion to the maximum extent permitted in the absence of Roe.

Meanwhile, seven states ? California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Nevada, and Washington ? have laws on the books protecting women?s right to an abortion.

4. What do abortion-rights groups see as the most worrisome trends?

These groups point to the gradual erosion of women?s access to abortion, reduction in the number of clinics, and reduction of funding and insurance coverage for abortion.

1973 ?was a high point for women?s reproductive freedom,? says Donna Crane, policy director of NARAL Pro-Choice America in Washington. ?In the 40 years that followed, the Supreme Court has gotten increasingly conservative and has allowed more and more antiabortion state laws to creep on the books.?

Since 1995, Ms. Crane notes, 754 ?antichoice? state laws have been enacted. In 2011 alone, some 92 restrictions were enacted, a record.

The regulations targeting providers are having an effect. According to the Guttmacher Institute, the number of abortion providers has been generally decreasing since 1982, when there were 2,908. In 2008, the most recent year for which Guttmacher provides figures, there were 1,793 ? fewer than in 1974.

5. What trends concern anti?abortion groups?

While most legislation has centered on abortion restrictions, abortion-rights activists have seen some successes, too ? particularly around some sweeping bans on abortion that were defeated by referendums in antiabortion states like South Dakota and Mississippi.

And while Virginia?s controversial ultrasound bill was ultimately passed, several other states ? including Alabama, Idaho, and Pennsylvania ? decided not to seek similar legislation after watching the battle play out.

6. How have the public?s views evolved over the past 40 years?

Polling has been controversial, since results vary based on how questions are framed and who asks them.

Based on Gallup polling, the percentages of Americans who believe abortion should be legal under all circumstances, illegal under all circumstances, and legal only under certain circumstances have stayed remarkably stable. The biggest chunk of Americans falls into the last group: 52 percent in 2012, compared with 54 percent in 1975. A quarter of Americans told Gallup last year they believed abortion should be legal in all circumstances, compared with 21 percent in 1975.

Over the past 17 years, however, Gallup polling has shown that fewer Americans identify as favoring abortion rights ? declining from 56 percent in 1995 to 41 percent in 2012 (for both years, these responses came after survey-takers had been asked about the legality of abortion).

California Senate leader pushes national mental health plan ...

Darrel Steinberg is pushing for a national mental health plan.
Come for the party, stay for the lobbying. Or is that vice-versa?

State Senate leader Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento) is in Washington, D.C., this week to attend the inaugural festivities. But he?s mixing a little business with pleasure, looking to bend the ear of congressional leaders on mental health issues.

Motivated by the shootings in Newtown, Conn., Steinberg is urging Washington to adopt a national mental health policy. He presented his recommendations to a commission spearheaded by Vice President Joe Biden to come up with ideas about how do reduce gun violence.

Steinberg says his $10-billion plan to diagnose and treat mental illness would go a long way toward reducing mass shootings like the one at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., last year. Steinberg led the effort for Proposition 63, which generated about $1 billion a year for mental health programs in California.

The measure was funded with a 1% state surcharge on incomes of more than $1 million.
