A look at BlackBerry maker Research in Motion

On Thursday, BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. offered details on layoffs and announced yet another delay in its BlackBerry 10 devices. It also reported disappointing earnings for the latest quarter. On Friday, its stock price fell 19 percent.

RIM faces the most difficult period in its history. RIM, which fathered the ground-breaking BlackBerry in 1999, has hired a team of bankers to help it weigh its options. Those options include partnering with other companies, licensing software and overhauling its business.

Here's a look at recent developments as the company struggles to regain market share lost to Apple's iPhone and devices running Google's Android operating software:

Sept. 15, 2011: RIM reports a sharp drop in net income and revenue in the fiscal second quarter and says it has sold far fewer PlayBook tablet computers than it expected.

Oct. 10: Email and Internet services are disrupted for three days, primarily outside North America. RIM says a crucial link in its infrastructure had failed, and a backup didn't work either. By the third day, other users, including those in the U.S. and Canada, were affected by a backlog of traffic.

Oct. 25: RIM says it is delaying the launch of an upgraded operating system for the PlayBook until February, saying it isn't up to its standards yet. The company also says the new version initially won't have the popular messaging service BlackBerry Messenger. It's the third delay announced since the features were promised in April.

Dec. 2: RIM says it is writing off much of its inventory of PlayBook tablets after it had to sell them at a deep discount. The model originally priced at $500 now costs $200. The company says it's taking a pre-tax charge of $485 million in the just-ended quarter. RIM also says it will sell fewer BlackBerrys in the holiday quarter than in the one that just ended. It also says it won't meet full-year earnings guidance of $5.25 to $6 per share, the third cut in a row.

Dec. 6: RIM says "BlackBerry 10" will be the new name for its next-generation system after the company loses a trademark ruling on its previous name, BBX.

Dec. 15: RIM says new phones deemed critical to the company's future won't be out until late 2012. The company says the BlackBerry 10 phones will need a highly integrated chipset that won't be available until mid-2012, so the company can now expect the new phones to ship late in the year. The company also says BlackBerry sales will fall sharply in the holiday quarter compared with the three months that ended Nov. 26. RIM says it would only ship between 11 million and 12 million BlackBerrys in the fourth quarter, down from 14.1 million in the third quarter.

Jan. 22, 2012: RIM founder Mike Lazaridis and long-time executive Jim Balsillie announce they will step down as co-CEOs. Thorsten Heins, a chief operating officer who joined RIM four years ago from Siemens AG, was named as their replacement. Lazaridis and Balsillie remain on the board.

Feb. 21: RIM finally releases an upgraded operating system for its PlayBook. The free upgrade allows for built-in email, calendar and contacts on the tablet ? features promised within 60 days after the PlayBook's launch last April. The PlayBook had received negative reviews because it launched without an email program and the popular messaging service BlackBerry Messenger. The new version still doesn't include the messaging service.

March 29: RIM says Balsillie has resigned from its board, and two top executives are leaving. RIM also writes down the value of its product inventory again as the company reports a loss of $125 million, its first quarterly loss since fiscal 2005. Heins doesn't rule out a sale, but he says it is not the main direction of the strategic review he's overseeing.

April 26: Newest board member of RIM says a turnaround could take three to five years. Prem Watsa, RIM's third-largest investor, says he sees his investment in the company as a long-term one, adding that RIM's fortunes won't be reversed soon.

May 1: RIM unveils a newly designed smartphone prototype powered by its upcoming BlackBerry 10 system. The prototype BlackBerry has a touchscreen, but no physical keyboard like most BlackBerry models. No update was given on the new system's launch date.

May 2: Company stresses that while the prototype has no physical keyboard, RIM will continue to make some models with one.

May 8: RIM announces hiring of two senior executives from struggling tech companies. Frank Boulben, the new chief marketing officer, comes from LightSquared. Kristian Tear, the new chief operating officer, is from Sony Mobile Communications.

May 29: RIM says it will have an operating loss in the current quarter and significant layoffs this year. The company says it has hired J.P. Morgan and RBC Capital Markets to help evaluate various strategies, including opportunities to partner with other companies and license software.

June 20: RIM says it has started laying off employees as part of a restructuring plan aimed at saving about $1 billion this year.

June 21: Company says the first BlackBerry device running BlackBerry 10 will not have a physical keyboard, only a touch-screen one. Ones with hard keyboards will eventually be made, but the company declines to say when.

Monday: Stock hits lowest level since 2003. Morgan Stanley's Ehud Gelblum says the company is facing a "triple whammy" in the current quarter. Gelblum says RIM's phones are aging, growth in the global smartphone market is slowing, and shipments are likely to decline ahead of the launch of BlackBerry 10 phones.

Thursday: RIM says it's cutting 5,000 jobs, or about 30 percent of its workforce, and delaying the launch of BlackBerry 10 yet again, to the first quarter of next year. It also reported worse results for its latest quarter, which ended June 2, than analysts had expected.

Friday: Stock falls 19 percent to nine-year low.

And lots of people out there just want to know what it all really means. And at 1:30pm PT (4:30pm ET) today, the White House will take to Twitter to clear up people's questions and worries, 140 characters at a time.

(AP) ? Calls by Mongolia's ruling party for a recount of votes at some polling stations Friday delayed results in sharply contested legislative elections that centered on how to spread the wealth from the poor but fast-growing country's mining boom.

The Mongolia People's Party said it asked for the recount because discrepancies turned up in vote totals tabulated by machines and then counted by hand at some polling stations.

The request sent political leaders huddling with the General Election Commission, which had been expected to announce the results from Thursday's voting on Friday morning.

The delay is a reminder of the young democracy's bare-knuckled politics. The last poll four years ago touched off riots that left four dead after the opposition Democratic Party claimed voting irregularities. To avoid a repeat, the government imported the electronic voting machines, only to have the main political parties ask that the votes also be counted by hand to corroborate results.

Both the ruling party and the opposition Democrats told voters they were better positioned to use revenues generated by mining mammoth reserves of coal, copper and gold to create jobs and narrow a rich-poor gap in the landlocked country between China and Russia.

Neither main party was expected to win an outright majority in the 76-seat Parliament, likely giving smaller parties a role in setting up a governing coalition.

Mindful of the violence in 2008, ruling party politicians struck a measured tone, saying they would abide by the law, even as they asked for the recount.

"The election should run according to laws. The party election committee has complaints regarding vote counting and we are addressing the issues," said Prime Minister Sukhbaatar Batbold, the ruling party chairman.

Mongolian People's Party politicians said they found discrepancies in two polling stations in the capital, Ulan Bator. Party candidates lost in machine counts but won when the votes were counted by hand.

The Democrats also cited delays in delivering results from 400 voting machines to the election commission.

hedge trimmer, hedge trimmers - Tips for Using Hedge Trimmers

If you're using power hedge trimmers for the first time, you might enjoy the idea that you can mold your bushes into a neat shrub that enhances your yard. To make this vision a reality, consider following these tips for a safer, more efficient experience.

Owner's Manual Read the owner's manual before you get started. It might be boring, but you can learn some features about your new hedge trimmers to make the machine work better for you. You might also discover some safety tips to help keep yourself and your property safe.

Trim in Small Sections While it might be tempting to trim your hedges down several inches in one fell swoop, do a small portion at a time. If the line is lopsided, it will be much easier to fix. You can always cut more, but you can't put it back once it's been removed.

Bare Branches The interior of bushes rarely looks like the outside. Cutting off a significant amount from the top or the sides will often leave bare branches exposed without leaves. It will grow back, but be prepared for the new look to last a while.

Blooms Wait until flowering bushes, such as azalea, camellia and forsythia, have finished blooming before trimming. Not only does removing the blossoms take away their added beauty, it could stunt their growth for next year.

Safety Always use the proper safety gear when operating power equipment, especially hedge trimmers. Wear gloves, safety glasses, long pants and steel-toed shoes.

Vision Don't trim what you can't see. Use small sweeping motions to reduce the overgrowth of hedges. Survey the plant material before you start and remove any hazards. Watch out for utility wires, nests, fences, walls, vines and animals.

Caliper Determine the maximum caliper that the hedge trimmer can cut. Understand what it means by measuring a branch if necessary.

Shapes Avoid creating cookie-cutter shapes with shrubbery. Allow the bush to follow its natural shape, or make a natural slope of narrower at the top than the bottom.

Equipment Check that your hedge trimmers and other equipment is in good shape before attempting to use it, whether for the first time or for any other time after that.

Equipment Maintenance Use the right type of power. If your hedge trimmer takes gas for fuel, find out before filling up the tank whether it has the proper mixture of oil and gas or uses straight gas. Batteries should be charged or replaced as needed. Maintain the blades and store the device as recommended. Keep tools locked up safely until it's time to use them.

Ask Bas Lansdorp About Going to Mars, One Way

NASA's been solicited ideas for exploring Mars, but Dutch entrepreneur Bas Lansdorp is already planning a different kind of trip than is likely to come from the U.S. government. Lansdorp's Mars One project has the goal of putting humans on Mars in 2022, with a twist that might dampen many people's hopes to be a Mars-exploring astronaut: the trip Lansdorp plans is one-way only. That means dramatically less fuel on board, because unlike typical Mars voyage plans, there would be no need (or ability) to carry the mechanism or the energy storage to return to Earth. If you (and three close companions) are willing to go be the first people to die on Mars, you'll also need to give up more than a pinch of privacy, because the Mars One plan to obtain the necessary funding is straightforward: create a media spectacle, and monetize it through advertising. (Note: If Elon Musk's optimistic sounding predictions are right, maybe one-way Marstronauts can get a return ticket, after all.) Many questions about the proposed journey are answered in the project's FAQ; check there before formulating questions. Ask Lansdorp about the practicalities and impracticalities of reaching Mars with as many questions as you'd like, but (lest ye be modded down) please only one question per post.

US gasoline prices cheapest since January

(AP) ? The price of gasoline has dropped to a five-month low, giving drivers some relief ahead of the July 4 holiday.

The national average fell to around $3.40 per gallon on Tuesday. South Carolina, at $2.987, has the distinction of being the first state with an average below $3 since February 2011. Even in states that impose high gas taxes, such as New York and California, pump prices are averaging less that $4.

Americans are now spending roughly $200 million per day less on gas than in early April, when gas peaked at $3.94 per gallon. And analysts are expecting further declines. One economist on Tuesday forecast the national average will soon fall to $3.10 per gallon.

Still, saving a few dollars on gas only does so much for consumer psychology in the current economic climate. The Conference Board's reading of consumer confidence fell in June for the fourth month in a row. It said worries about the unemployment rate, low home values, a shaky stock market and a struggling European economy could hamper consumer spending, which accounts for 70 percent of U.S. economic activity.

Cheaper gas hasn't encouraged people to drive more either. They're buying about 3.5 percent less gasoline than they did last year, even though a gallon is now 18 cents cheaper.

"There's still so much uncertainty out there," said Gene McGillian, a broker and oil analyst at Tradition Energy. "The economy's still in troubled waters. Unemployment hasn't fallen that much and people are just more conscious about how much they drive."

MasterCard SpendingPulse, which tracks gasoline purchases around the country, said Americans have bought less gas for a record 66 weeks in a row when compared with how much they purchased a year before.

Worries about the global economy are keeping oil near 8-month lows. Prices have dropped more than 20 percent since May 1, though they rebounded Tuesday as European leaders prepared to discuss a slate of proposals to stabilize the region's economy. Meetings are scheduled for Thursday and Friday.

A failure to finally find a solution would likely push the eurozone economy back into recession and cut energy demand in a region that consumes 16 percent of the world's oil.

Benchmark U.S. crude added 15 cents to end the day at $79.36 per barrel in New York while Brent crude added $2.01 to end at $93.02 per barrel in London.

Oil was due for a rebound after the steep drop, McGillian said. Brent crude jumped after Norway announced that crude production will decline in the North Sea after about 700 oil workers went on strike. Brent crude comes from the North Sea.

In other futures trading, heating oil added 3.8 cents to finish at $2.5765 per gallon while wholesale gasoline was steady, ending the day at $2.6451 per gallon. Natural gas added 7.3 cents to finish at $2.767 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Binge eating improves with deep brain stimulation surgery

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? Deep brain stimulation reduces binge eating in mice, suggesting that this surgery, which is approved for treatment of certain neurologic and psychiatric disorders, may also be an effective therapy for obesity. Presentation of the results took place June 25 at The Endocrine Society's 94th Annual Meeting in Houston.

"Doing brain surgery for obesity treatment is a controversial idea," said the study's presenting author, Casey Halpern, MD, a fifth-year neurosurgery resident physician at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. "However, binge eating is a common feature of obese patients that frequently is associated with suboptimal treatment outcomes."

Currently the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved deep brain stimulation for use in various conditions that affect the brain, including Parkinson's disease and essential tremor. The procedure does not destroy any part of the brain and typically does not cause pain, Halpern said.

Available treatments of obesity may inadequately address the neural basis of this compulsive overeating behavior, he suggested. A region of the brain called the nucleus accumbens is known to be dysregulated in both rodents and people who binge eat. Therefore, Halpern and his co-workers targeted that brain region with deep brain stimulation in a strain of obesity-prone mice.

The surgery involved implanting an electrode in the nucleus accumbens. Wires connected the electrode to an external neurostimulator, a device similar to a pacemaker. When switched on, the stimulator triggers the electrode to deliver continuous electrical pulses to the brain.

After recovery from surgery, the mice received high-fat food at the same time every day for one hour, and the researchers measured their food consumption. Binge eating was defined as consuming 25 percent or more of the usual daily caloric intake during this period.

For one week, mice consistently binged, eating almost half of their daily calories during this one hour, the authors reported. Then on alternating days, the investigators turned on the stimulator. On the days that deep brain stimulation was administered, or "on," the scientists observed a significant (approximately 60 percent) decrease in consumption of the high-fat diet. On the alternate days when they turned off the stimulator, binge eating returned, Halpern said.

The researchers then studied how deep brain stimulation might work to improve binge eating. With medications, they blocked various receptors of dopamine neurons, or nerve cells. Dopamine is a brain neurotransmitter, a chemical messenger, whose release in the brain is linked to the desire for rewarding behaviors such as eating high-fat food, according to Halpern.

Only one of the medications had an effect. Raclopride, which blocks the type 2 dopamine receptor, weakened the beneficial effect of deep brain stimulation by 50 percent.

Their results, Halpern said, showed that "at least one way that deep brain stimulation functions to suppress binge eating might be by modulating activity of neurons expressing the type 2 dopamine receptor."

'Twilight' Heads To 'Family Guy' And Comic-Con

Kellan Lutz is voicing a 'Family Guy' character, 'Breaking Dawn - Part 2' is opening Comic-Con and more, in 'Twilight' Tuesday.
By Kara Warner

Kellan Lutz and Kristen Stewart in "Breaking Dawn - Part 2"

There is never a dull moment in the world of "Twilight." The fact that we dedicated fans still have a few months to wait before the release of "Breaking Dawn - Part 2" does not mean that our favorite subject and the actors associated with it are not making headlines elsewhere.

This week's "Twilight" Tuesday is dedicated to our favorite bits of "Twilight" news percolating around the Internets:

"Breaking Dawn - Part 2" To Open Comic-Con
As was expected, Summit announced that "Breaking Dawn - Part 2" will once again take San Diego Comic-Con by storm. The film will kick off the festivities in the convention center's massive Hall H as the very first panel on Thursday, July 12. As many of us remember fondly, Hall H was the site of the franchise's first-ever Comic-Con appearance back in 2008, when thousands of excited fans made the pilgrimage to San Diego to see the cast assembled together for the first time. No word yet on which castmembers will be making the trip to the Con, but because it's in support of their last "Twilight" movie, we're betting on seeing most, if not all, of our favorites.

Kellan Lutz Gets Animated
Kellan Lutz is lending his voice to Seth MacFarlane and the cast of "Family Guy." According to Entertainment Weekly, Lutz will appear on an upcoming episode as a love interest for Meg Griffin (voiced by Mila Kunis) as a hunky high school football player Meg fantasizes about. The show's executive producer Mark Hentemann told EW that although Meg convinces him to go on a date with her, Lutz's character has ulterior motives — an interest in one of the other Griffins. Lutz reportedly made a great impression on everyone when he recorded his part. "[He] got into the role and walked that line perfectly," Hentemann said. "He was great. He was very handsome."

Teaser Trailer Postmortem
Have you stopped watching that expertly crafted new yet? Last week's preview not only featured the anticipated first look at several new vampires, but thanks to the enthusiasm and support from the franchise's millions of fans, the trailer broke the record for the most downloads (7 million!) in 24 hours.

Here's Why The Yammer-Microsoft Deal Might Be ... - Business Insider

The Yammer-Microsoft deal has just handed LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner a one-of-a-kind opportunity.

Weiner recently said that LinkedIn, which runs a mostly public professional social network, has been testing a private network for its own employees to share information.

That's exactly what Yammer does.

He also pointed out that employees use LinkedIn to discover information about what their coworkers do?the kind of information that ought to be available through internal directories, but almost never is.

That's a strength of Yammer, too.

Whenever a big company acquires a smaller one, some talent leaves, employees jockey for position in the new organization, and product development slows down as people focus on integration projects.

So the acquisition will slow Yammer down. There's no way to help that.

Some people?especially entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley?just don't like Microsoft, and try to avoid using its products. It may not be large numbers, but some people who were fans of Yammer as an indie product will be open to trying out alternatives.

"Yammer and LinkedIn do pretty different things," said Yammer CEO David Sacks in a conference call discussing the deal. "We've never seen them as competitive to what we're doing."

And that's true: LinkedIn makes most of its money from recruiting services based on its vast public database of professional profiles. It doesn't need to get into Yammer's business. Point is?as Weiner hinted?it could.

At the very least, LinkedIn could use the threat of launching a Yammer competitor to get a favorable deal to keep integrating LinkedIn's data into Microsoft tools like its Outlook email client.

We asked LinkedIn for comment. A spokesman declined to speak on the record about the Microsoft-Yammer deal.

When?Fortune writer Adam Lashinsky discussed the prospect of Microsoft buying LinkedIn, Weiner laughed.

'Anger' actress: I don't think about Sheen's past

FX

Daniela Bobadilla as Sam Goodson in "Anger Management."

By Cody Delistraty

Charlie Sheen doesn't exactly have the reputation as an actor who's easy to work with. Given his recent history of badmouthing just about everyone related to his former sitcom "Two and a Half Men," it's fair to wonder how the self-proclaimed "rock star from Mars" so quickly rounded up a cast for his ?comeback? show,? ?Anger Management.? Sure, the money and (dubious) notoriety that come with working alongside Sheen certainly help, but some close to him?have chosen to insulate themselves from the harsh realities of Sheen?s not-so-distant past.

?Honestly, I?d heard a little bit of what had happened during that big whole rant, but I?m not big on, like, TMZ or anything, so I didn?t read too much into it,? said Daniela Bobadilla, who plays Sheen?s 15-year-old daughter, Sam Goodson. ?As a person, he?s just the most caring, and he?s extremely grateful for anyone and anything around him.?

Though you may not recognize her name, Bobadilla isn?t exactly a newcomer to the small screen. She played Emma on NBC?s just-canceled ?Awake,? and guest starred on ?Desperate Housewives? this year before the series ended.

The doe-eyed 19-year-old?s character has her work cut out for her on ?Anger Management.? ?High-schooler Sam has the task of keeping her anger-prone, superficial father (Sheen) on the straight and narrow. While Bobadilla hasn?t a qualm in the world about working with the infamous actor, ignoring his past requires some clever phrasing and unique thinking.

Asked whether Sheen?s past behavior taints the show, Bobadilla demurred, then responded, ?Depends what you focus on."

But for her it?s not Sheen?s past but his imminent retirement that?s most upsetting. ?Charlie?s just so good I got really sad when he told me that (he?s retiring after ?Anger Management?). I asked him one day on set, ?Are you sure?? He?s like, ?Yeah. You can watch my earlier stuff. I?ve done it for a while.? So many people love him. I mean, I?m going to be sad. Really sad.?

Perhaps this sadness stems from an apparently reinvented Sheen who has crafted a kinder image of himself during this final, redemptive hurrah, showing a sweet disposition toward Bobadilla ever since her first audition for the show.

After the audition, ?Charlie started singing one of the songs that I had done in a musical theater production, and it totally freaked me out,? Bobadilla recounted. ?I was like, ?Uh ...,? and he?s like, ?Yup, I YouTubed you!? ?

Run a YouTube search for Sheen, however, and it?s clear that he doesn?t lead as bright and smiley of a life as his co-star. It's difficult to see the Sheen that Bobadilla so fondly describes. His frustration with ?Two and a Half Men? still lingers, and he maintains a bitterness toward the TV industry that was made evident in his recent interview with The New York Times.

?I watch those yahoos (at "Two and a Half Men") struggle over garbage, and it was still garbage and insisting that they?d done their best, and they hadn?t," he fumed to the paper. "They got lazy. And they got other shows going and abandoned us. Whatever.?

While Sheen works his way through his multitude of recent missteps and the relationships they've destroyed, in Bobadilla's glimmering eyes, the sun is brightly shining and everything is swell for her co-star and "Anger Management."

"I have to see him as the person he hopefully is," she said. "He?s back, he?s OK, he?s trying to make things right!?

Whether it's true is beside the point.

"Anger Management" premieres June 28 at 9 p.m. on FX.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ? Wildfires damaged more than a dozen Colorado homes over the weekend and forced evacuations for thousands more while shrouding top state tourist destinations in smoke and emptying hotels and campgrounds ahead of the Fourth of July holiday.

Colorado is having its worst wildfire season in a decade, with more than a half dozen forest fires burning across the state's parched terrain. One of the newest fires, a blaze near Colorado Springs, grew to more than 3 square miles Sunday after erupting just a day earlier and prompting evacuation orders for 11,000 residents and an unknown number of tourists.

The fire sent plumes of gray and white smoke over the area that obscured at times Pikes Peak, the most-summited high-elevation mountain in the nation and inspiration for the song "America The Beautiful."

Winds had started to push smoke away from Colorado Springs and evacuations orders were lifted for the 5,000 residents of nearby Manitou Springs, but area residents and tourists still watched nervously as haze wrapped around the peak.

"We're used to flooding and tornadoes, nothing like this," said Amanda Rice, who recently moved to the area from Rock Falls, Ill. Rice, her husband, four children and dog. They left a Manitou Springs hotel late Saturday.

Rice, scared when she saw flames, took her family to the evacuation center before she was told to go.

"It was just this God-awful orange glow. It was surreal. It honestly looked like hell was opening up," Rice said Sunday.

Even while other large fires burn across the West, Colorado's blazes have demanded half the nation's firefighting fleet, according to Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper. He said C-130 military transport planes from Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs would begin assisting Monday.

"People recognize this is going to take a big push" to extinguish, Hickenlooper said Sunday from a Colorado Springs grocery store, where volunteers were passing out burritos, sandwiches and drinks to 350 firefighters working near Pikes Peak.

A statewide ban on open campfires and private fireworks has been in place for more than a week.

While no homes were reported damaged in the Colorado Springs-area fire, a forest fire near Rocky Mountain National Park destroyed structures near the mountain community of Estes Park. The Larimer County Sheriff's Office said Sunday that 22 homes and 2 outbuildings had been burned.

The Estes Park destroyed vacation cabins and closed the most commonly used entrance to the park. Clouds of smoke blew toward the 102-year-old Stanley Hotel that inspired Stephen King to write "The Shining."

Also over the weekend, residents of a subdivision near the northern Colorado city of Fort Collins learned that 57 more homes in their neighborhood had been lost to High Park fire, which already had claimed 191 homes, authorities said.

The High Park Fire is the second-largest wildfire and among the most expensive in Colorado's history. It has scorched more than 130 square miles and was just 45 percent contained on Sunday, The Denver Post reported.

With Colorado midway through its worst wildfire season in a decade, travelers have seen some of their favorite sites closed to the public, obscured by smoke and haze. Some travelers were awoken with evacuation orders.

Families planning whitewater rafting trips or visits to the stunning red-rock formations in Garden of the Gods park in Colorado Springs were instead spending their vacations passing out bottled water and setting up cots in evacuee centers.

They included Mark Stein of Morristown, N.J., whose family arrived after midnight Sunday at their Manitou Springs hotel for a week of whitewater rafting and sightseeing.

"We were sleeping for 15 minutes when they started knocking on the door ? a day from hell," Stein said of the day of travel. With his wife and two sons, Stein spent the first night of his vacation setting up cots for more than 200 evacuees who slept at the school.

"I think it's the best vacation ever. This is what the real world is about. There's a lot of people that need help," Stein said.

Also Sunday, a brushfire that began near Elbert, about 50 miles southwest of Denver, quickly spread to about 60 acres, forcing the evacuation of about 100 residents.

Elsewhere, firefighters contended with windy and heat as they battled wildfires in Utah, New Mexico, Arizona and California.

? In Utah, a 15-square-mile blaze around Fountain Green in Sanpete County was threatening more than 359 permanent structures and 213 mobile homes and travel trailers in four rural subdivisions, forcing about 1,000 people to flee. BLM says the human-caused fire erupted Saturday afternoon. Officials report progress on a 9-square-mile wildfire around Saratoga Springs, about 40 miles south of Salt Lake City.

? In Montana, two wildfires were burning in the southwest part of the state, including the fast-moving Antelope Fire, which started Saturday afternoon about 10 miles north of Whitehall and had grown to 462 acres on Sunday. About 100 firefighters were battling that blaze.

? In Arizona, the U.S. Forest Service said Sunday that containment against the Pecos Fire, just outside of Young, is up to 50 percent and remains under 12,000 acres. Officials say many of the firefighting resources are being released to their home units or to other fire assignments.

Jerry Sandusky case: Summary of the investigation and the charges against the former Penn State University defensive coordinator

Jerry Sandusky leaves the Centre County Courthouse on June 22, 2012, after being found guilty of 45 of 48 charges he faced in his sexual abuse trial. Summary

Former longtime Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, known for his charitable work with at-risk children and for helping establish the school's "Linebacker U" reputation, was found guilty of 45 of 48 charges that he sexually assaulted 10 boys over 15 years in Centre County, in a scandal that ended the 46-year tenure of football coach Joe Paterno.

The 68-year-old Sandusky's bail was revoked, and he was taken to county jail June 22 after the jury returned the 45 guilty verdicts. He is to be sentenced about three months from June 22.

His attorney said the convictions would be appealed.

Sandusky was arraigned Nov. 5 in Centre County court and released on $100,000 unsecured bail after prosecutors charged him with abusing eight boys. A second set of charges was filed Dec. 7, adding two alleged victims, and a judge ordered Sandusky held overnight until he could post $250,000 cash bail.

Sandusky waived his preliminary hearing Dec. 13.

He originally was charged with 52 counts, but prosecutors dropped one charge on June 18 saying the statute he was charged under did not apply at the time of the alleged illegal contact. The judge dismissed three other charges June 21: two counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and one count that the judge said was the same as another charge.

Penn State athletic director Timothy Curley and the school's senior vice president for finance and business Gary Schultz have been charged with perjury and failure to report suspected child abuse in relation to sex-abuse charges filed against Sandusky. On Dec. 16, a judge held Curley and Schultz over for trial. They

maintain their innocence.

Paterno and university president Graham Spanier were fired Nov. 9 by the board of trustees. Paterno had come under harsh criticism for not taking more action in 2002 after a graduate assistant reported seeing Sandusky in the Penn State showers with a young boy. Paterno notified Curley and Schultz. Paterno was not a target of the criminal investigation before his death on Jan. 22.

Curley asked to be placed on administrative leave Nov. 6 in order to devote the time needed to defend himself against the allegations, according to Penn State officials.

Schultz also stepped down Nov. 6 in order to defend himself and return to retirement, and Penn State assistant coach Mike McQueary, a key witness in the case, was placed on administrative leave, effective Nov. 11.

Naked volunteers painted in red and gold pose for American photographer Spencer Tunick in scenes meant to illustrate the opera "Der Ring des Nibelungen" by Richard Wagner at Max-Joseph Platz in Munich, Germany, Saturday.

By Ian Johnston, msnbc.com

Naked volunteers painted in red and gold on Saturday recreated American photographer Spencer Tunick's interpretation of scenes from the Richard Wagner opera "Der Ring des Nibelungen."

The art installation, in Max-Joseph Platz, Munich, Germany, was held to mark the opening of the 2012 Munich summer opera season, according to information supplied with these photographs by Luca Teuchmann of Getty Images.

Tunick was invited to create the work by the Bavarian State Opera.

According to his website, Tunick has been documenting the "live nude figure in public" since 1992.

The Bavarian State Opera invited American photographer Spencer Tunick to create the photographs as part of the opening of the 2012 Munich summer opera season Saturday.

"Tunick's installations encompass dozens, hundreds or thousands of volunteers; and his photographs are record of these events," the website says.

"The individuals en masse, without their clothing, grouped together metamorphose into a new shape. The bodies extend into and upon the landscape, like a substance," it adds. "These grouped masses, which do no underscore sexuality, become abstractions that challenge or reconfigure one's views of nudity and privacy."

Baseball Great Johnny Bench Had Skin Cancer Surgery

Hall of Fame baseball legend Johnny Bench,64,who was the Cincinnati Reds' star catcher in the 1970s,is promoting skin cancer awareness for Major League Baseball's Play Sun Smart campaign.Bench has quite a bit of personal experience with the topic,as he himself was recently diagnosed? with, and successfully treated for, basal cell carcinoma, the most common form of skin cancer. It was found on his lower eyelids.
The problem with skin cancer is,you can easily overlook it,just dismissing those small lesions on your face or elsewhere on your body.It often takes a dermatologist to determine just what those bumps, moles or rough patches really are. They could be malignant or precancerous, even though they may not look particularly menacing to the naked eye.At his doctor's suggestion,Johnny Bench had those little bumps on his lower eyelids biopsied by a specialist. When they turned out?to be basal cell carcinomas,he underwent highly sophisticated surgery called Mohs surgery,in which the surgeon basically?slices off minute layers of skin cells, checking each layer under a microscope until there are no more cancerous cells left. This preserves more of the surrounding healthy tissue.
Bench fully recovered from his January operation, but he wants to make sure others don't have to go through the ordeal of skin cancer. He committed himself to the MLB skin cancer awareness program, becoming its 2012 spokesman and appearing in a Play Sun Smart?video with Harlem youths.Play Sun Smart is a joint educational project of Major League Baseball;the Major League Baseball Players' Association;and the American Academy of Dermatology.
Skin cancer is linked to cumulative exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays.It is estimated that 20% of Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetimes.Organizations such as the American Academy of Dermatology and MLB are trying hard to get the word out about this potentially deadly disease.Besides basal cell carcinoma, the?other, less common forms of skin cancer are squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma, the? rarest and most dangerous form.

Pentagon review recommends combat pay changes

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A Pentagon review recommends ridding the combat pay system of inequities that have allowed officers thousands of miles from battle to get better benefits proportionally than troops on the front lines in Afghanistan.

The recommendations in a review released Thursday are likely to anger service members. But the director of the review said they're aimed at paying more to troops who are in the gravest danger and giving the best tax benefits to those who are paid the least.

Military officers who are not near the fight can sometimes get more in combat pay and tax benefits than troops who are getting shot at on the front lines, said Thomas Bush, who directed the review. He said the main goal was to make combat pay more equitable.

The report doesn't recommend any specific rates of combat pay or say that certain troops should get less. But, Bush said, "we suggest there be some meaningful distinction" between troops who are getting shot at and those who are simply deployed to one of many countries designated as combat zones.

Under the military's current system, there are two types of combat pay. One, called "hostile fire pay," gives troops $225 a month if they are in an area where they could be exposed to enemy fire.

The second, called "imminent danger pay," gives up to $225 per month to those who are in a combat zone, and it is pro-rated at $7.50 a day, based on how long they are there.

Bush said the report recommends that hostile fire pay be more than the danger pay and that there be levels of imminent danger pay based on where service members are. Currently they can get the danger pay for being in more than two dozen places, including Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kyrgyzstan, the Philippines and Jordan ? as well as in Afghanistan, Yemen and Somalia.

"We want to target compensation to people who are at the greatest risk," Bush said.

In December 2009, President Barack Obama directed the department to examine four specific areas: combat pay, benefits and pay for the National Guard and Reserve, compensation for wounded service members and their survivors and pay incentives for key defense jobs, such as drone operators, special operations forces, linguists and mental health professionals.

Under the current system, service members up to the top level senior enlisted rank do not pay taxes on their pay when they are in a war zone. Higher level officers would not pay taxes on the portion of their salary equal to the top senior enlisted members' amount.

When they go to a combat zone, the taxes are no longer taken out of their pay, giving them an automatic raise for their deployment time.

The proposed change would make the combat pay a refundable tax credit that service members would file for at the end of the tax year.

But Bush said that because of the federal tax code, the benefits for higher level officers clearly outweigh the tax benefits for low-ranking troops, because much of their pay would already be at a very low tax rate.

The panel was struck by that disparity, Bush said, adding that a senior officer could get as much as a $15,000 tax benefit, while an Army private might get a $1,000 tax benefit.

And yet, the private serving at a combat outpost in Kandahar or Khost in Afghanistan has a much higher chance of getting killed or injured than a senior officer serving in a headquarters unit or in Bahrain.

Congress members have been loath to do anything that appears to cut combat pay and have often tried to increase pay raises for the military. Bush acknowledged that it's not clear how open they would be to the changes recommended by the report, but he said he hoped lawmakers would be open to making the system more equal.
