I was making a mental packing list for a fall weekend at the beach: sweatshirt, jeans, sunglasses, those sandal things?you know, for walking on rocky shoreline? Kind of ugly, but useful? I could picture them clearly?the rubber soles and webbed uppers?but their name escaped me entirely. A person?s name, maybe? I started to go through the alphabet letter by letter, hoping for a clue. But it was gone. Not ?wait, wait, don?t tell me!? Not ?on the tip of my tongue.? Just gone.
This kind of lapse has always happened to me now and then, especially when I?m very busy, and happens more frequently as I get older. It happens to my patients, too, and they come in concerned that it may be the first sign of Alzheimer?s disease or some other form of dementia. It rarely is.
Half of people over 65 notice more frequent episodes such as I?ve described, where they can?t think of a word or a name. Another common complaint is misplacing items like keys, or entering a room and forgetting why you?re there.
Normally, these lapses?I hate the term ?senior moments? because they happen to non-seniors as well?are isolated, temporary, and not progressive. In other words, that name does come to you, you do figure out where the keys are, and the problem does not spread to other brain functions. Also, the sense that you?re having difficulty remembering things is subjective?your friends and family may not notice.
In early Alzheimer?s-type dementia (the term is qualified because only those who have specific pathological changes in the brain are said to have Alzheimer?s), family and friends may be more aware of a person?s memory deficit than he or she is. It?s not only word (or key) finding that?s affected, but also the ability to do certain familiar tasks such as tying a tie or following a recipe or card game. Recent information, such as what you ate for breakfast, is more likely to be inaccessible than remote data, such as the names of your elementary school teachers.

Some research suggests that older people who have subjective memory loss of any kind are more likely to go on to have dementia in later years. But given the very high percentage of older people who complain of forgetfulness, it?s hard to know who should be especially concerned. And since treatments for dementia once it occurs are not very effective, prevention rather than screening seems more valuable, at least for now.
Here are some steps to help prevent dementia and they include exercise, reducing saturated fat in the diet, adequate sleep, and other measures recommended for general health.
For those seriously concerned about memory loss, a physical exam and blood work may help diagnose conditions such as thyroid disease, vitamin B12 deficiency, and vascular disorders that might be contributing to the problem.
For those, like me, who have occasional forgetfulness, try slowing down, stop multi-tasking, relax, and give it a few minutes ?

UK's Barclays looks to move on from Libor scandal

LONDON (Reuters) - Barclays reports third-quarter results on Wednesday, with new chief executive Antony Jenkins aiming to restore some stability after a tumultuous summer for the UK bank dominated by fallout from the Libor interest rate rigging scandal.

Jenkins, appointed CEO at the end of August, has taken over from Bob Diamond, who resigned after Barclays was fined for its part in manipulating the Libor benchmark interest rate. Investors are looking for clues on how radical the new CEO will be in shaking up the bank.

Jenkins, due to unveil a full strategic plan in February, is expected to focus more on retail banking and less on riskier investment banking but the shift could be gradual as the latter provides the bulk of the bank's profits.

Barclays is expected to report an adjusted third quarter pretax profit broadly in line with analysts forecasts of 1.7 billion pounds ($2.7 billion). Analysts say it is in a stronger position than rivals to cope with troubled euro zone economies and tougher finance sector regulations.

Swiss bank UBS unveiled plans on Tuesday to fire 10,000 staff and wind down its fixed income business. Barclays and Deutsche Bank stand to benefit from UBS's retreat. Deutsche Bank's investment bank produced record third quarter revenue and helped lift group profit by 20 percent.

Barclays has already warned it will take a 700 million pound charge in the third quarter for the mis-selling of payment protection insurance. It is also expected to take a 1.1 billion pound accounting-related hit on the value of its own debt.

The bank suffered another blow this week when a High Court Judge ordered it to stand trial over damages stemming from Libor manipulation - the first such case to be heard in a British court.

The case relates to the mis-selling of interest rate swaps to small businesses, for which Barclays has already set aside a 450 million pound provision, a number which analysts now believe could rise further.

Barclays Chairman Marcus Agius will step down on Wednesday, handing over to David Walker, who has said he will work closely with Jenkins to shake up culture and reshape the bank.

ARM unveils chip designs for future smartphones, servers

LONDON/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - British chip designer ARM on Tuesday launched processors to power a new generation of smartphones and also offer low-energy solutions for servers, increasing its incursion into a market dominated by Intel.

The Cambridge-based company, whose technology is in Apple's iPhone 5 and Samsung Electronics' Galaxy S3, said its latest blueprints would deliver three times today's processing power using the same amount of energy.

The new chips use 64-bit architecture, an upgrade from current 32-bit designs that will give them increased processing clout suitable for servers while retaining their energy efficiency, the company said.

Chips made using technology licensed from ARM are used across the smartphone and tablet industry. The company is now promoting an emerging trend toward building data centers with many small, low-energy chips instead of a few high-performance ones.

The microserver industry is in its infancy, with Hewlett-Packard, Dell and other vendors showing keen interest.

PC chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices said on Monday it would use ARM's technology to make microserver chips available starting in 2014.

ARM Chief Executive Warren East told reporters at an event in San Francisco that ARM-based servers may account for a fifth of data centers by 2020.

He said interest in microservers is spreading beyond cutting-edge Internet companies like Facebook and Google to traditionally conservative customers, like banks' chief information officers.

"Getting to the CIOs of banks is quite a step but we're already seeing these types of people totally plugged into the notion of ARM-based servers, and looking at not so much whether, but how and when," East said.

Introducing 64-bit technology that lets processors interact more efficiently with memory chips, a feature already offered by Intel, is a key step toward making ARM chips more attractive for data centers.

East said Austin, Texas-startup Calxeda has demonstrated that ARM technology can reduce power consumption by over three quarters in servers.

Unlike in the PC industry, which Intel dominated for decades, manufacturers in the smartphone industry can buy their processors from any number of chip designers.

East said data-center equipment manufacturers will also benefit from more options as ARM-based chip designers launch competing chips into the server market, long an Intel stronghold.

Licensees of ARM's new 64-bit Cortex A-50 series include AMD, Broadcom, Calxeda, HiSilicon, Samsung and STMicroelectronics, the company said, and the first chips are expected to ship in 2014.

FEIN is an acronym for Federal Employer Identification Number, also known as an EIN. This unique nine-digit number is used by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to identify a business operating in the United States.

The FEIN is issued in the following format:
01-2345678. ?In contrast, Social Security numbers are issued as 012-34-567. This identification number normally remains permanently connected to the business and is not reused or assigned to another business.

Federal Employer Identification Numbers are issued to partnerships, corporations, non-profit organizations, and to other business entities. Sole proprietors can operate using the Social Security number of the business owner unless there are employees or certain retirement benefits involved. ?Anytime employees become a factor, FEINs are required.

The FEIN can be used to identify a business when reporting information to the IRS and the Social Security Administration, as well as for tax filing. It can also be used to open business bank accounts and for legal purposes.

The FEIN application?is available on the IRS web site along with useful information.?Other ways to obtain the FEIN including requesting IRS Form SS-4 by mail or completing the online SS-4. ?Instructions for filing Form SS-4 are available on the IRS web site.??

Once issued, the FEIN should remain attached to the business until a qualifying change is made or the business requests the FEIN be retired. A qualifying change would include a sole proprietorship changing entities and becoming a corporation, a corporation changing to a partnership, and a partnership adding a new partner to the business. In general, the FEIN does not need to be changed if the business decides to change the name, address, phone number, or location, provided the business remains in the United States.

Although the IRS cannot simply cancel the assigned FEIN, the account can be closed at ?the request of the business. Closing the account may be the best option if the FEIN was requested, but the business was never opened. Regardless, the FEIN still belongs to the business entity and can be reactivated at a later date if necessary. The FEIN does not expire.?

Business owners who need to close their FEIN account and are operating for profit should mail a letter to the IRS in Cincinnati, OH 45999, including the business name, legal name if different, the business address, and FEIN. Owners of non-profit businesses who decide to close their FEIN can mail a similar request to IRS, Attn: EO Entity, Mail Stop 6273,Ogden, UT 84201.

Mechanism found for destruction of key allergy-inducing complexes, researchers say

ScienceDaily (Oct. 28, 2012) ? Researchers have learned how a synthetic molecule destroys complexes that induce allergic responses -- a discovery that could lead to the development of highly potent, rapidly acting interventions for a host of acute allergic reactions.

The study, published online Oct. 28 in Nature, was led by scientists at the Stanford University School of Medicine and the University of Bern, Switzerland.

The new inhibitor disarms IgE antibodies, pivotal players in acute allergies, by detaching the antibody from its partner in crime, a molecule called FcR. (Other mechanisms lead to slower-developing allergic reactions.)

"It would be an incredible intervention if you could rapidly disconnect IgE antibodies in the midst of an acute allergic response," said Ted Jardetzky, PhD, professor of structural biology and senior investigator for the study. It turns out the inhibitor used by the team does just that.

A myriad of allergens, ranging from ragweed pollen to bee venom to peanuts, can set off IgE antibodies, resulting in allergic reactions within seconds. The new inhibitor destroys the complex that tethers IgE to the cells responsible for the reaction, called mast cells. Severing this connection would be the holy grail of IgE-targeted allergy treatment.

The first time a potential allergen enters the body, some people respond by making allergen-specific IgE antibodies. These antibodies stick around long after the initial allergen is cleared from the body. Most of the antibodies get snagged by IgE-specific receptors called FcRs, which are exposed on the surface of mast cells. The mast cells are then primed to react the next time a person encounters the allergen.

Dissociation of this IgE-FcR interaction is a sought-after goal of allergy treatment for a good reason: IgE-coated mast cells are grenades of histamine, and re-encountering the allergen is equivalent to pulling out the clip. When an allergen makes a return visit, it binds to the pre-loaded IgE on the mast cell surface, triggering the release of inflammatory mediators -- including histamine -- that promote the allergic response. As allergy sufferers are well aware, these nasty reactions can occur within a matter of seconds. In a severe allergic response, sudden anaphylactic shock and death can be the result.

The key to actively disabling the allergic response lies in the separation of IgE from the FcRs on the surface of mast cells. But separating these dangerous couples is a tall order because their interaction is extremely stable -- sensitizing the mast cells for weeks. Currently available treatment using omalizumab (an anti-IgE antibody sold under the trade name Xolair) can block new interactions between IgE and FcR, but it is not designed to pry the molecules apart once they've formed a bond on the surface of a mast cell. So Xolair can dampen the allergic response, but as stated on the product's website: "Xolair is not a rescue medicine and should not be used to treat sudden asthma attacks."

While simply blocking IgE binding is helpful for some allergy sufferers, when it comes to the rapid quenching of an acute allergic response, "what you'd really like to do is get rid of it," said Jardetzky. Along with scientists at the University of Bern, his team discovered that an engineered protein inhibitor called DARPin E2-79 stripped IgE from the mast cell receptor. Using this inhibitor, "an interaction that normally lasts for hours or days in terms of its stability is stripped off in a matter of seconds," said Jardetzky.

DARPin E2-79 is one of a family of engineered inhibitors containing protein-binding regions called ankryin repeats. While Jardetzky's group was using structural biology and biophysical approaches to probe the weak spots in the IgE-FcR interaction, scientists at the University of Bern were tinkering with DARPins that dampened IgE's disastrous effects. The collaboration of the two groups resulted in the characterization of DARPin E2-79, an inhibitor that goes beyond mere blockade to actively disassemble the IgE-FcR power couple.

Jardetzky's group solved E2-79'S structure and used this information to model its interaction with the IgE-FcR pair. Then, using sensitive biochemical techniques that detect step-by-step binding interactions between molecules, the teams were able to tease out the mechanism that the inhibitor uses to break the IgE-FcR bond.

The researchers found that E2-79 hastens the separation of the two molecules by taking advantage of a moment of weakness in the relationship between IgE and FcR. IgE maintains its interaction with FcR using two contact points, and occasionally one of these points releases while the other one keeps the pair together. Normally this brief looseness isn't enough to separate the couple, but E2-79 can swoop into the small space between them, effectively driving the couple apart.

While E2-79 is the first molecule to display these IgE stripping characteristics, Jardetzky hopes that this work will stimulate the discovery of smaller compounds capable of working even more efficiently. Drug developers generally expect large macromolecules like E2-79 to be less potent than small molecule inhibitors and unlikely to be able to disrupt complexes, so the fact that E2-79 worked so well was a surprise. Small molecules are more amenable to oral administration, and are easier and cheaper to manufacture than large macromolecules. "Now we're in the hunt for a small molecule that could have this kind of activity. That would be the real hit," said Jardetzky.

The discovery of E2-79's mechanism of IgE inhibition could lead to rapid discoveries from other labs as well. Now that scientists know what mechanism to look for, they may be inspired to dig back through freezers full of IgE inhibitors that were identified years ago, said Jardetzky. In the light of techniques described in this study, perhaps once-neglected inhibitors will show new promise in the treatment of allergic disease.

The study's primary authorship was shared between Beomkyu Kim, PhD, a Stanford graduate student, and Alexander Eggel, PhD, at the University of Bern. The other Stanford co-author is research assistant Svetlana Tarchevskaya.

The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health, the American Asthma Foundation and the Swiss National Science Foundation.

She also wasn't sweating the Des-Moines Register's Romney endorsement, their first Republican endorsement in forty years. "It was a little surprising to read that editorial because it didn?t seem to be based at all in reality, not just in the president?s record but in Mitt Romney?s record," Cutter said. "It says he?d reach across the aisle when he?d do the exact opposite... He?s never once stood up to the far extreme right wing."?

Singles and Doubles Brackets Feature All-Yale Semifinals

NEW HAVEN, C.T. ? The Yale men's tennis team put on a stellar display on Saturday at the Connecticut State Championships to take complete charge of the event.? The Bulldogs' dominant performance at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center allowed them to claim all four semifinalist spots in both the singles and doubles draws, guaranteeing a Yale victory in both competitions.?

Yale fielded six players in the singles round of 16, including the top four seeds in the event, who all managed to live up to their billing.? Senior captain and defending champion Daniel Hoffman, the No. 1 seed, cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Fahoum Fahoum of Quinnipiac.? Freshman Martin Svenning, seeded No. 3, defeated Sacred Heart's Brian Power by the same score.? The No. 2 and No. 4 seeds, freshman Jason Brown and sophomore Daniel Faierman, respectively, did not enjoy such straightforward wins but came through nonetheless.? Brown overcame a stiff challenge from Dennis Zlobinsky of Fairfield, 7-5, 7-6, while Faierman fended off Jacob Spreyer of the University of Connecticut, 7-6, 6-3.? Junior Patrick Chase also advanced to the quarterfinals by upsetting the No. 6 seed, Ian Tesmond of Fairfield, 7-5, 6-2.? Senior Zachary Dean was the only Yale casualty of the round, as he lost 6-2, 6-1 to the No. 7 seed, Sebastien Barbero of Quinnipiac.

Yale began to take charge of the tournament with a sweep in the quarterfinals that saw Bulldogs claim all four semifinal spots.? The top four seeds all posted wins to advance to the penultimate round.? Faierman had by the far the most difficult match of the four, as he was thoroughly challenged by his own teammate, Chase.? Faierman was ultimately able to edge Chase in a final set tiebreaker to complete the 6-4, 4-6, 1-0(7) win.? In the semifinals, Hoffman will take on Svenning, while Brown will play Faierman.? ??

The doubles quarterfinal round offered a very similar story, as Yale's teams also claimed all four semifinal spots.? The Bulldogs' top senior duo of Hoffman and Marc Powers earned its place in the final four with a comprehensive 8-3 win over Zlobinsky and Ofir Solomon of Fairfield.? Chase and senior John Huang defeated the University of Connecticut team of Wayne Harrell and Wei Lin by the same score.? The all-freshman pairing of Brown and Svenning and the all-sophomore tandem of Faierman and Zachary Krumholz also advanced to the semifinals.? Faierman and Krumholz defeated their own teammates, Dean and junior Tommy Ratchford, in a close encounter, 8-6.

Yale's veteran teams controlled the semifinals, as Hoffman and Powers fought off a game challenge from Brown and Svenning to win 8-4, while Chase and Huang out-played Faierman and Krumholz to advance to the final round.? These two experienced teams will play for the doubles title, with Huang looking to claim the victory for the second year in a row.

The all-Yale singles semifinals and final of the Connecticut State Championships will take place Sunday at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center, as will the all-Yale doubles final.?

Over the next few weeks millions of Americans will receive their 2013 open enrollment materials. Although it?s tempting to simply check ?same as last year,? that can be a costly mistake ? especially if your employer is offering different benefit plans next year or your family or income situation has changed.

Plus, an important feature of health care flexible spending accounts, which many people use to reduce their tax bite, is changing next year (more on that below). Here?s what to look for when reviewing your benefit options:?

Plan changes. Many benefit plans ? especially medical ? change coverage details from year to year. If you?re offered more than one plan, compare features side by side to ensure you?re choosing the best alternative. Common changes include:

• Dropping or replacing unpopular or overly expensive plans.
• Increased monthly premiums for employee and/or dependent coverage.
• Increased deductible and/or copayment amounts for doctor visits, prescription drugs, hospitalization, dental or vision benefits, etc.
• New eligibility rules for dependent coverage.
• Revised drug formularies (the list of covered medications, including copayment levels for different drug classifications).
• Favored doctors or hospitals sometimes withdraw from a plan?s preferred provider network, boosting the cost to see them or even eliminating them as an option.
• Raising maximum yearly out-of-pocket expense limits.
• (Note: As part of health care reform, the annual maximum payout limit your insurance is required to pay has increased to $2 million.)?

Review spouse?s coverage. Compare your employer?s plans side-by-side with those offered by your spouse?s employer, particularly when deciding where to insure your children. Just make sure it?s apples-to-apples. For example, one plan may charge lower premiums but have higher deductibles and copayments or offer a more limited drug formulary.?

Flexible spending account (FSA) options. If offered by your employer, health care and dependent care FSAs can significantly offset the financial impact of medical and dependent care by letting you pay for eligible out-of-pocket expenses on a pre-tax basis; that is, before federal, state and Social Security taxes are deducted from your paycheck. This reduces your taxable income and therefore, your taxes.

You can use a health care FSA to pay for IRS-allowed medical expenses not covered by your medical, dental or vision plans, including deductibles, copayments, orthodontia, glasses, contact lenses, prescription drugs, chiropractic, smoking cessation programs and many more. (Note: except for insulin, over-the-counter medicines now require a doctor?s prescription to be eligible.) Check IRS Publication 502 for allowable expenses.

Dependent care FSAs let you use pre-tax dollars to pay for eligible expenses related to care for your child, spouse, parent or other dependent incapable of self-care. Eligible expenses include:

• Fees for licensed day care and adult care facilities.
• Amounts paid for services provided in or outside your home (including babysitter, nursery school or summer day camp) so that you and your spouse can work, look for work, or attend school full-time.
• Before- and after-school programs for dependents under age 13.
• Babysitting by relatives over age 19 who aren?t your dependent.

For some lower-income families, the federal income tax dependent care tax credit is more advantageous than an FSA so crunch the numbers or ask a tax expert which alternative is best. Be aware that you cannot claim the same expenses under both tax breaks. (To learn more about the tax credit, read IRS Publication 503.)

Here?s how FSAs work: Say you earn $42,000 a year. If you contribute $1,000 to a health care FSA and $3,000 for dependent care, your taxable income would be reduced to $38,000. Your resulting net income, after taxes, would be roughly $1,600 more than if you had paid for those expenses on an after-tax basis. Use this calculator to evaluate your own situation.

Keep in mind these FSA restrictions:

• Important: Effective January 1, 2013, employee contributions to health care FSAs are now limited to $2,500 a year; however, if your spouse has FSAs at work, you still may contribute up to $2,500 to each account.
• The dependent care FSA contribution limit remains unchanged at $5,000.
• Health care and dependent care account contributions are not interchangeable.
• Estimate planned expenses carefully because you must forfeit unused account balances. Some employers offer a grace period of up to 2 ? months after the end of the plan year to incur expenses, but that?s not mandatory, so review your enrollment materials.
• Outside of open enrollment, you can only make mid-year FSA changes after a major life or family status change, such as marriage, divorce, death of a spouse or dependent, birth or adoption of a child, or a dependent passing the eligibility age. If one of those situations occurs mid-year, re-jigger your FSAs accordingly for maximum savings.
• You must re-enroll in FSAs each year ? amounts don?t carry over from year to year.?

Family status changes. If you marry, divorce, or gain or lose dependents, it could impact the type ? and cost ? of your coverage options. For example:

• Compare maternity and pediatric benefits offered by the various medical plan options. Slightly lower premiums might not be worth more restrictive coverage.
• Recalibrate life insurance and disability coverage if more dependents now rely on your pay.
• Also review beneficiary designation forms to ensure your life insurance, 401(k) or other plan benefits will go to the appropriate people if you should die unexpectedly.

Commuting cost benefits. Although it?s not part of annual enrollment, many companies help employees reduce their commuting costs (via public transportation or qualified parking) through a tax-free employer-paid subsidy, a pretax employee-paid payroll deduction or a combination of the two. Unlike FSAs, commuter accounts can be changed on a monthly basis, as needs change.

Premier League leaving Fox in US after season

NEW YORK (AP) - English Premier League games will no longer air on Fox's networks in the United States after this season.

Fox Sports Media Group said in a statement Friday that the EPL informed the company it would not be accepting its bid. Fox Soccer had been the primary U.S. outlet for the Premier League for almost two decades.

Fox sublicensed some of its games to ESPN.

Fox still owns rights for UEFA's Champions League and Europa League among other international events and will broadcast men's and women's World Cups from 2015-22.

The Premier League could move to NBC's networks, which made a deal for Major League Soccer last year.

Comet Ridge Drills Gunn 2 Well, Australia>> LNG World News

Brisbane-based coal seam gas explorer Comet Ridge Limited announced that the first well in its three-well drilling campaign in the Galilee Basin has been successfully drilled and tested in ATP 744P in the Galilee Basin, central Queensland, with the rig released on 22 October 2012.

Comet Ridge holds 100 per cent equity in ATP 744P.

The Gunn 2 well is located 93 km NNW of Aramac and 576 km WNW of Gladstone. The well was spudded on 10 October 2012 and reached a total depth of 1,050 metres. A total net coal thickness of 16.2 metres was intersected in the Permian Betts Creek Beds with five potential reservoir coals contained in this interval.

After wireline logging was conducted, a formation scanner was run to identify natural fractures in the coals. Wireline conveyed testing tools were then used to flow test four separate coal intervals in the Betts Creek Beds, including two coal intervals in the base of the section that had previously not been tested in the Gunn Project Area.

All four coal intervals tested demonstrated good to excellent productivity.

Seven-inch diameter production casing has been run and cemented in place and the well will be completed for production in early November with production tubing and a pump to be installed.

Managing Director, Tor McCaul, said he and the Comet Ridge technical team were extremely pleased with the productivity of the coals in this well. Mr McCaul also said that the well flags an important milestone for the Company, as the first production well for Comet Ridge in the Galilee Basin.

He commented, ?Our forward plan, as outlined in the recent capital raising presentation in August, is to complete this well for production and then to conduct an Extended Production Test (EPT). This single well EPT is a significant step, ahead of our planned pilot scheme. The EPT on Gunn 2 will give us good quality water data and enable us to critically assess our completion methodology. These will be key inputs for designing our full pilot production scheme next year with the objective of starting to move our significant Contingent Resources over to Reserves.?

The rig will now move southeast to drill Schmitt 1, followed by Cernan 1, as Phase 1 of the farm-in to the Lake Galilee Farm-in Area (in ATP 1015P), announced in July 2012 (see map on page following). These two wells will be cored to measure key coal properties and whilst wireline conveyed testing tools may be utilised to examine coal productivity, there are no current plans for Extended Production Tests on these two wells.

Australopithecus afarensis (the species of the well-known ?Lucy? skeleton) was an upright walking species, but the question of whether it also spent much of its time in trees has been the subject of much debate, partly because a complete set of A. afarensis shoulder blades has never before been available for study. For the first time, Midwestern University Professor David Green and Curator of Anthropology at the California Academy of Sciences, Zeresenay Alemseged, have thoroughly examined the two complete shoulder blades of the fossil "Selam," an exceptionally well-preserved skeleton of an A. afarensis child from Dikika, Ethiopia, discovered in 2000 by Dr. Alemseged. Further preparation and extensive analyses of these rare bones showed them to be quite apelike, suggesting that this species was adapted to climbing trees in addition to walking bipedally when on the ground. "The question as to whether Australopithecus afarensis was strictly bipedal or if they also climbed trees has been intensely debated for more than thirty years," said Dr. Green. "These remarkable fossils provide strong evidence that these individuals were still climbing at this stage in human evolution." The new findings are published in the October 26 issue of the journal Science.

Dr. Alemseged, assisted by Kenyan lab technician Christopher Kiarie, spent 11 years carefully extracting the two shoulder blades from the rest of the skeleton, which was encased in a sandstone block. "Because shoulder blades are paper-thin, they rarely fossilize--and when they do, they are almost always fragmentary," said Dr. Alemseged. "So finding both shoulder blades completely intact and attached to a skeleton of a known and pivotal species was like hitting the jackpot. This study moves us a step closer toward answering the question 'When did our ancestors abandon climbing behavior?' It appears that this happened much later than many researchers have previously suggested."

Selam was a three-year-old A. afarensis girl who lived about 3.3 million years ago, and she represents the most complete skeleton of her kind to date. After freeing the shoulder blades from the surrounding rock, Green and Alemseged digitized them using a Microscribe, and then took detailed measurements to characterize their shape and function, comparing them to the rare shoulder fossils of other early human relatives: Homo ergaster ("Turkana Boy"), Homo floresiensis ("The Hobbit"), A. africanus, and two adult specimens of A. afarensis. They also made comparisons with an extensive modern sample of juvenile and adult chimpanzee, gorilla, orangutan, and human specimens.

The analysis of the shape and function of the bones revealed that A. afarensis shoulder blades are apelike, indicating a partially arboreal lifestyle. Drs. Green and Alemseged also found that, like living apes, the shoulder anatomy of juvenile and adult representatives of A. afarensis were quite similar. "Human scapulae change shape throughout ontogeny in a significantly different manner than closely related apes," said Dr. Green. "When we compared Selam's scapula with adult members of Australopithecus afarensis, it was clear that the pattern of growth was more consistent with that of apes than humans." You also won't have to resort to the web to find out if it's raining in your neighborhood: a Bing Maps radar overlay shows if it's safe to leave the umbrella at home. The app is free to download, which makes it entirely too easy to check the weather through Windows instead of the window.

Muslim pilgrims stone devil in symbolic hajj rite

MINA, Saudi Arabia (AP) ? Millions of pilgrims in Saudi Arabia on Friday furiously cast pebbles in a symbolic stoning of the devil, carrying out a final rite of hajj, as Muslims around the world celebrated the start of Islam's biggest holiday, the Feast of Sacrifice.

After stoning three walls symbolizing Satan in a rejection of sin and temptation, male pilgrims changed out of the seamless terrycloth robes of pilgrimage and shaved their heads, as a sign of renewal. Women ? and those men who prefer not to undergo a complete shave ? had a lock of hair clipped.

Though pilgrims will repeat the stoning ritual for at least two more days, they could now call themselves "hajjis," referring to those who have done the pilgrimage.

Malik Evangelatos, from Ukiah, Calif., said the experience felt "wonderful, satisfying and humbling."

Evangelatos, who converted to Islam six years ago, said the simple pilgrim's garment that he had worn the past few days helped him "see the bigger picture in life and go back changed, happy and appreciative." For him, the hajj brought a chance to be truly equal regardless of ethnicity or race.

"It has probably been the highlight of my life outside of getting married and having a baby," he said. "You feel an emotional release. It is something that is not recreated anywhere else in the world."

For the stoning ritual, the 3.4 million pilgrims from around the world filed in crowds through a multi-level structure housing the walls symbolizing the devil in the desert valley of Mina, outside the holy city of Mecca.

The structure of ramps maintains traffic flow, moving pilgrims on four levels past the walls, as they throw seven pebbles at each. Some have criticized the nearly kilometer-long (0.6 mile) cement structure, which resembles a mega parking garage with escalators, saying it detracts from the simplicity and spiritual aspect of hajj.

But the facility protects lives, Hajj Ministry Director General Amin Fatani, told The Associated Press. The stoning ritual has been the scene of deadly crushes and stampedes killing hundreds ? the most recent in 2006 ? as pilgrims tried to squeeze past and throw their stones, especially since there used to be pillars instead of walls, meaning the massive throngs had to focus on a smaller point. Even with the walls, pilgrims on one side often get hit by pebbles thrown by people on the other side.

"The life of a hajji is precious to the government and their safety comes first," Fatani said. "If we leave hajj the way we had it been before, there will be a catastrophe from the first day."

On Friday, Muslims marked the holiday, known in Arabic as Eid al-Adha, commemorating what Muslims believe was Prophet Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail ? the Biblical Ishmael, though Christians and Jews believe his other son Isaac was the near-sacrifice ? as a test of his faith from God.

Around the world, Muslims slaughtered lambs, sheep and other livestock in remembrance, giving the meat to the poor. At Mina, pilgrims purchased tokens to have a sheep slaughtered at nearby slaughterhouses.

The day of stoning marked an exhausting trek for pilgrims between the string of ritual sites strung across the desert outside Mecca. They spent the day Thursday at Mount Arafat in a day of contemplation and prayers to wipe away past sins. Then overnight, they went to the nearby plain of Muzdalifah to collect the pebbles they would use in the stoning ritual before heading to Mina by the morning.

Between the movements, many also went back into Mecca to again circumambulate the Kaaba, the cube-shaped structure toward which Muslims pray every day ? Islam's holiest site.

Tunisian pharmacist Ahlam Zahar said she teared up seeing the sheer number of people praying in unison as she approached the Kaaba late Thursday before coming to Mina for the stoning on Friday.

"Hajj needs energy and concentration," she said. "It's really hard under the heat."

For most pilgrims coming from poorer Muslim nations, it is common to sleep in the streets and walk the trajectory among the sites, a distance of around 30 kilometers (19 miles). Many have children or elderly relatives with them.

"I envy them," Ahmed Fahmy said of those enduring the difficult trek. "These people are following the footsteps of the Prophet (Muhammad). They could manage to get rides, but they exhaust themselves for the bigger reward with Allah."

Fahmy, the general manager of the Cairo-based Islamic Huda TV, said this was his 11th Hajj to complete. Despite feeling tired afterward, the reward of the pilgrimage is in the hardship one faces, he said.

"You feel obedient to Allah," Fahmy said. "I feel like it's something that is entirely for the pleasure of Allah."
