CMRL adds extra land for metro construction

Ripon buildingChennai ? The construction of Chennai metro rail is slowly blocking the Ripon Buildings in the city. The metro authorities have not taken proper permission from government or Corporation Council in this regard.

The Ripon Buildings is the seat of the Chennai corporation and is positioned near the Chennai central railway station. In 2010, State government and Chennai Corporation were allowed to use 4507 sq. m. of the land by issuing G.O and passing resolution respectively.

The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) added extra area to the construction site on the premises of Ripon Buildings.

CMRL added 1.5 metre more towards the heritage structure. This addition of extra site was not issued by any new order after the state government allowed to use 4507 sq. m. of the land in the year 2010 by issuing G.O. Same is the case with Chennai Corporation who did not pass any new resolution for this extra addition of site.

According to a senior official of CMRL, so far no extra land was demanded from the Ripon Buildings premises. He?said?that they are planning to seek extra land from the Chennai Corporation for the construction work. This extra land is required as new designs led to rearrangements of the structures which were planned earlier. And in this regard, they have still not submitted any proposal.

The official added that the metro officials completely understand the heritage value of the 100-year-old structure and thus will propose their plan their accordingly. He pointed out shifting of few ducts which are spoiling the frontage of the Ripon Buildings in Chennai city.

In 2011, the State government allowed to use 1964 sq mt of land in Victoria Public Hall by issuing G.O. But metro officials require additional land in the heritage premises for diverting traffic. In this regard they are planning to send a proposal next week. It is expected that the heritage conservation committee would accept the proposal soon.

CMRL has not taken any decision yet of the extra land required on the premises of Ripon Buildings. They initiated the construction in the premises of Ripon Buildings on May 4, 2011. This digging work on the lawns of heritage structure was done to facilitate the construction of an underground Chennai Central Metro Station.

The CMRL assured the civic body to give the land in same condition after the construction work of Central metro station box finishes.
