What defines a solid security strategy today?

The IDC 2013 CIO Summit is currently underway in Cape Town this week ? an event aimed at bringing insight into the key business strategies that CIOs need to consider in a constantly evolving business world. The theme of this year?s event is??Seize the Moment: Transform, Innovate, and Collaborate??? looking at the latest trends and ICT best practices CIO?s should take?note of.

According to a recent study undertaken by Kaspersky Lab, in partnership with B2B International, entitled Global IT Security Risks: 2012, half of those surveyed (IT professionals working for large and medium sized businesses), stated that cybercrime, in its various forms, is the second biggest threat impacting businesses today.

Sergey Novikov, head of EEMEA Research Centre,?Kaspersky Lab says; ?Businesses and CIOs cannot ignore the seriousness of the evolving threat landscape ? as it is impacting commerce on a daily basis. Therefore, the trends and IT best practice that Kaspersky Lab is delivering at this event will look at the topic of security strategies today, in an aim to continue to educate businesses and key decision makers about the realities of IT threats for their organisations ? so they can take the right proactive action!?

Security technologies have of course advanced and adapted to the changing threat landscape faced by most networks, yet there are certain types of attacks that still come as a surprise, no matter how proactive the industry is.

More complex, targeted attacks ? such as Red October have been detrimental to business. Continues Novikov; ?It?s clear that the growth of cybercrime is exponential, and together with the continually sophisticated growth of malware targeting businesses, I have to reiterate the question of why companies are not changing their security approach based on this insight??

Finding the functional balance between technology, people and processes for effective security is a critical element for CIOs to consider for their IT security department today.

Based on the survey carried out,?preventing IT security breaches is the top concern for IT professionals today (31% of respondents). Therefore, Kaspersky Lab believes that?business security strategies in 2013 need to allow?IT Administrators to?See, Control, and Protect?their network.

Adds Novikov; ?Considering the trend of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) among others impacting businesses organisational structures, it has become essential that IT administrators are able to see and fully control the business security strategies, to be able to implement the necessary and relevant policies with an end result of protecting the organisation network.?

In line with this,?Kaspersky Lab recently?unveiled its new generation of business security solutions for the SA region, which are designed to help businesses overcome the latest security threats and challenges that exisit, in managing a secure, efficient network using the apporach of See, Control and Protect.?Kaspersky?Endpoint Security for Business (KESB),?has been built to provide the industry?s best protection from advanced malware and cybercrime, and also to combat another common enemy of IT security ? complexity.

Taking place at The Westin Hotel in Cape Town, the event promises to be an informative one that offers CIOs and key business decision makers with the insight into the tools they need to remain competitive and on top of their game today. Kaspersky Lab will not only provide insight into effective security strategies for business, but Sergey Novikov will also provide an overview of current attack vectors and incidents in corporate infrastructures, together with a threat landscape forecast ? looking at the changes and risk challenges that exist.

Concludes Novikov; ?In an aim to combat cyber crime and educate the market on the latest in security risks and threats, Kaspersky Lab is once again proud to be partaking in this event as it will no doubt once again prove highly beneficial for all attendees, and offers us an opportunity to share our knowledge and advice.?
